This is my submission to the #cees_doors challenge. It's a lyrical rewrite of a song called "The Gambler," performed by Kenny Rogers back in the late 1970's. Using my own words, I've written it to the tune of that song. Thank you for reading.
THE TRAVELER by lovenotes_from_carolyn On a long and winding road Through the journey of existence I met a fellow traveler Whom I walked with for a while
He wasn't one for talking And I noticed his resistance So instead of conversation I simply offered him a smile
Soon the day grew into nighttime And the world fell dark around us All was still and silent 'Cept the movement of our feet
The traveler looked my way Then he told me his life story And he said his circumstances Left him feeling dead and beat
When he'd said what needed sayin' He paused for just a moment Then again he looked my way And said that I'd been awfully nice
He was grateful that I'd listened But his soul was dreadful weary And in his desperation He requested my advice
I said "Friend, I ain't no expert I'm just a fellow traveler But I can see how bad you're hurtin' So I'll tell you what I know"
"In life there's lots of choices I think of 'em as doorways And when it comes to doors You gotta know which way to go"
Chorus ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You've got to know when to open 'em And know when to close 'em Know when to turn away And when to bolt them shut
And at times when you're uncertain You gotta trust your instincts You gotta look deep down within And always listen to your gut ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You see, every traveler knows That life ain't ever easy But when we don't trust our wisdom We got troubles all the more
Because all doors lead to hell And all doors lead to heaven It's all about perspective It really ain't about the door
The traveler looked bewildered And as he took in all I'd told him He was thanking me profusely For which I said there was no need
We stopped and slept a while And woke up with the sunshine The traveler looked straight at me And said "It's time I take the lead"
He said I'd taught him many lessons And it was time to change directions He knew his worth and purpose And that his soul was finally free
Then he warmly shook my hand And the traveler, he departed On the journey of existence To pursue his destiny
ARRIVEDERCI by lovenotes_from_carolyn And I'll shed not a tear for this town, not a one When I think of the way it defiled my young son How it stole from his smile, how it tore and it stung I'll shed not a tear, not a one
There'll be no love lost when we leave this damned city My thoughts are infernal, dear friend, they're not pretty Though these words that I weave, they may rhyme and sound witty There will be no love lost on this city
I'm not looking back when we leave this cruel place May it always recall the contempt on my face For all that it stole, I can never replace Nay, I'm not looking back on this place
Now hear this, you hell-hole, for I've so much to tell Though you tried to destroy him, my son shall be well He'll pick up the pieces, move on, and won't dwell He's no longer ensnared by your spell
Don’t be afraid to love and don’t be afraid to cry, The expressions that flow through your soul are a mural of art, a gallery of colorful hues that you can choose to splatter, shape or refine, There is no limit to the Creativity the visions that you draw upon to reach your dreams inside.
Heartbreak may etch red and black broken hearts Blue tears that spill upon your journal Blurring your poetry into a puddle of smeared ink too distorted to read as you fall asleep alone.
Death of loved ones May be black ink One phrase Followed by ten days of staring at your journal Empty words of hope, Blank pages that capture the blank spaces from the sorrow in your heart.
And when you are able Celebrate your accomplishments in life The days filled with family, friends, love and laughter When the music keeps drumming You can’t stop singing and your heart keeps dancing to your new found dreams Joy and meaning in life, Allow that paint to flow With the colours of your soul Yellow, orange and gold flow from the center of your heart.
Don’t be afraid to laugh, love or cry Life is too short To allow the poetry of your pen to dry.

DEARLY DEPARTING by Carolyn Glackin I guess I'll go now, fade away I'll bid adieu, I've naught to say Words are scarce when times are tough Please let me go, don't call my bluff The time has come, this now must end Please understand, I beg you friend You're burning bridges, I'm mending fences And there shall be no recompenses You've filled me up with sad saudade I should have known, I overstayed Sweet chantilly, linen, lace Forever strewn about your face And nothing dearer can e'er replace The truth of you, your saving grace You're building castles in the skies With rosy glasses o'er your eyes And here I stand as I surmise I'm better off without replies So goodbye kitchen, fare thee well Goodbye house of untold hell So long bedroom, I'll miss you most I'm there no more, I'll be a ghost Arrivederci, bon voyage! I'm taking leave of this montage The scene is set, the curtains drawn Goodbye old friend, adios, I'm gone. Copyright Carolyn Glackin 3/29/2021
Gotta love that artwork, right?! That's one way to leave home, I suppose.
