Dear Mumbai, You are called either the land of fantasy, or the overpopulated materialistic city; nothing in between. But here I am, treasuring the little joys you continue to give me.
When I was 5, I first saw the caves of Elephanta and cried because the idols were broken. At the age of 7 I got lost on CST railway station and a complete stranger left me home. 10 year old me fell in love with a painting on road outside Jahangir Art Gallery that I still hang on my bedroom wall. At 14 I bunked school for the first time, just to watch the most cliched DDLJ in Maratha Mandir with friends. I studied for my 10th boards just because I wanted admission in Jai Hind College. There I was shamed for not applying makeup, but only there did I found my best friend. At 17, when I saw you from the flight at 2am, I knew, you too, were insomniac. But that's the beauty of you. Also, The Marine Drive actually looks better at night! By 18 Kitab Khana had become my second home, and Vada Pav, my comfort food. But in 19 years of my life, I tell you, I haven't tasted anything better than Canon Pav Bhaji!
I wonder to how conclude this letter before mentioning the rains. Rightly said, rains in Bombay, fall directly from the heaven! And here I am today, wondering, if the heaven is actually better than you. Because beyond the mad rush, cut-throat competition and deep insecurities, I see a lotus of humanity still floating above the sludge. I see how people of all age, gender, religion and race live together. I see how my Muslim friend dances on Ganpati Visarjan and I crave for mutton biryani every Eid. I see how college kids unhesitatingly start a conversation with transgenders in the train. I see how my neighbour teaches his maid's little daughter for free.
And that's why, Mumbai, maybe for the first time, let me tell you that I love you.
