Rhyming scheme - ababcdecde
The literary world has never welcomed me with open arms. In fact, it has always considered me inarticulate and uncouth. I have been told several times that I am not fit to be called a civilised person, let alone a refined creative writer. Actually writing has never been my cup of tea. Even as a student, I hated writing essays and letters. I could barely touch the passing grades. My handwriting was horrible and none of my teachers actually wanted to have a cursory glance at my notes, let alone read them.
When I was in class nine, my science notebook fell into the hands of a school inspector who had paid a surprise visit to our school. I can't forget the first sentence of the remark he wrote on the last page.
"It's evident that this notebook has never been checked by a responsible parent or teacher."
I was produced before the headmaster after the inspector had left. I don't want to divulge the details of our encounter as they are a bit too unpleasant to read. Suffice it to say that the headmaster, an educationist of some repute and a man of refined tastes, was forced to use abusive language after going through my notebook and the inspector's remarks.
It didn't really matter to me because I stood there as a mute listener, but it tarnished his reputation. To this day, he is referred to as "the abusive headmaster". I have heard that he blames it on me.
I hated science, maths and drawing, and opted for languages as I saw them as an easy option. I always thought I had a flair for languages but my colleagues and my teachers thought otherwise. They thought I was rustic and no amount of education could have transformed me. The criticism didn't dampen my spirit though, and I continued to pursue my passion. I don't know if I'll ever receive fame or critical acclaim. I'm tired now and I may stop writing any moment...They think I'm uncivilised and uncouth
I'm accused of being rustic and raw
They say I'm a rude person, a foulmouth
The writer in me my detractors never saw
Desperate to make a mark as a writer,
I've worked really hard, be it verses or prose
only to be eluded by fame and critical acclaim
Sadly, never have I been a tenacious fighter
My innings as a writer might come to a close,
and I have nobody else but myself to blame
