DAY 3: DISCOVERING GREAT
One day while writing a sermon, I stumbled across the words of a favorite author and minister, Frederick Buechner. In reflecting on his long life of seeking God's leadership, Buechner writes in Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC, "The place God calls you to be is the place where your deep gladness and the world's great hunger meet."
This short sentence grasped me and set me free. At age fifty-seven, I knew that my deep gladness was working with young adults. I also sensed A that the world's greatest hunger is for an emerging generation to live with passion, purpose and vision. In the convergence of these forces, I sensed I would discover "the place God calls you to."
The most wonderful thing about Buechner's words, however, was a spiritual invitation that exulted, "Don't be compelled to do what you should do, ought to do, must do, have to do, don't want to do. Rather, get in touch with your great gladness and be free to go do it."
It was hard for me to believe that our loving God wanted me to focus my life on what brings me the greatest joy, but I was certain this is what it means "to be about my Father's business."
Dear Father, put me in touch with my great gladness. And may I have the courage to embrace joy. Amen. —SCOTT WALKER
