I am brown, the color of dirt,
This never fazed me; that’s just how I was brought up.
Yeah, a sneer here and there I have heard,
Yeah, I have been told to use a lot of turmeric and curd.
Yeah, I have seen all the lovely and fair advertisements,
But naah my lovely brown ladies and lads, this ain’t nothing but encouragement.
I travelled a thousand miles and some more,
To be told, almost as soon I walked through the door,
“You’re so brown….”, a guy said,
I braced myself for impact, readying responses in my head,
Should I go for, and you’re white,
Or should I congratulate him for not being color blind.
Automated responses ready and almost ablaze,
But I hadn’t prepared for, “Well damn girl, you’re just like caramel”.
The cheesiest line I had ever heard,
I almost laughed at this guy’s incredibly lame yet cute effort,
All automated responses went down the drain.
And I ended up saying, halting my deflective thought train,
“Well damn boy, that line’s so cheesy;
It can probably feed all the pizzas in Italy”
