    Luminescent

    It was warm and wonderful
The day I swallowed the sun whole
To absorb its light and energy
    Were my lurid goals
It grew in the pit of my stomach
Till it burst into silver showers
    Providing the lonely moon company
A slew of scattered silver stars
I would have liked to keep him close
But he chose to remain triumphant
However he didn’t let my efforts go in vain
Or let me be rendered redundant
I now traverse the ebony skies
    Feeling less melancholic and old
    Hugging each luminescent falling star
Before they are gone and turn oh so cold

    Grave

I lie deceased and buried in a grave in the ground
Wondering if being dead would be more fun
It is silent except for the crawling sounds
And the church bells that have just been rung

I’ve heard the service was poorly attended
With no one willing to say the eulogy
One would think people would show more compassion
For someone who died without a fuss in a tragedy

Except for my sobbing wife my death hadn’t seemed
To have reduced anyone to tears
I think most were relieved now that I was gone
I had been distant even to the near and dear

Left to my devices I am now that I am
Supposedly on my way to heaven
Although I doubt that shall ever come to pass
I am guilty of the sins , all of the seven

With no expectations from anyone in life
I had lived quietly and solitarily
With love for a drink and none for my nagging wife
I had lived unostentatiously but precariously

I keep wondering what epitaph they must’ve written
Who would’ve paid for the tombstone
It couldn’t have been my ungrateful children
Who would be glad now to have been left alone

Will the gravestone say that I was good
That in life I had mattered to someone
Or will it be bare with my name and date
Attached with a lame excuse homespun

My life had been lame and limp
I’m glad that now it’s all quiet and peaceful
So I can traverse to the doors of hell and hope
That in death, life would be more colourful

    Nostalgia

    The rainy summer afternoons
    And petrichor drenched sweet grass
The smell of hard bound old novels
Merlot poured in a wine glass
    The squeaky colourful swing set
And the rusty slides in the park
The weed filled gardens that once were
    Painfully frightful in the dark
The lanes where we would ride our bikes
Under gulmohars with large orange flowers
    Children leisurely playing hopscotch
Surrounded by scores of golden showers
Feeling scared of ghosts on the roof
Never ever following what was told
That time where life was carefree
When friendships mattered more than gold
Those picnic spots around the fields
Filled with daisies, jasmines and pear trees
    Chasing colourful butterflies all over
    Running after bugs and bees
The stories of great wonder that contained
    Magical pixies, fairies and elves
There is nothing more nostalgic than the
Things that remind one of our youthful selves

    Expectations

A decade ago I let you tower over me
While swallowing my ego and my pride
Over the years I hid away the scars of your abuse
Slowly absorbed your sneers and snides

    My meagre expectations drowned
In a sea of disappointed hopes and despair
When you threw me out of your life mercilessly
I thought, at least my life had been spared

    My feelings I resigned
    Of anger and of shame
Thought I had managed to bury the past
    And my discontentments tame

I have mixed emotions about you now
Some of grief and some of regret
    Some of long simmering ire
Making it ridiculously hard to forget

    Cursing my wrong judgement
In silence I have kept myself contained
    Shrinking and crouching in corners
Cringing every time someone mentions your name

Time remembers all and doesn’t heal
    What was once broken inside
Simply making it easier to conceal pain
    And splintered sentiments hide

Could I ever really stop loving someone
Whom I loved a little more than I loved myself ?
Could I keep my heart forever fooled ?
Let it get dusty while kept keyed on a shelf?

Do we really forgive and forget ?
And with our fractured lives move on ?
Do the fissures really ever heal and get filled ?
Is a new day in reality a new dawn ?

    Traditions

    I love that word “tradition”
Something I’m proud of as an Indian
The culture here has had set rules
For every person of every generation

I hail from a land that still greets guests
Like the good lord himself has arrived
Much is done to make them comfortable
Much happiness from that is derived

    Respectfully all elders are treated
    Their will governs the household
Families stay under one single roof
Safely enveloped and kept together in the fold

    Food is treated with reverence
    Multiple gods are considered holy
Animals are given their due but now
Change is arriving gradually and slowly

Inspite of much remaining the same
And things being done like they were before
The traditions that governed us are shifting
And adapting to the changing times some more

A woman’s place is no longer the hearth
She is allowed to fend for herself
Marriage is no longer forced upon her
And considered her only option once she turns twelve

Dividing caste lines are gradually blurring
Interfaith relationships are not rare anymore
Elders try to not interfere in the lives of the young
Although culture is still kept at the fore

Families no longer necessarily live as one unit
That doesn’t mean the love between them has declined
Elders are still considered voices of reason
Their authority is still not undermined

Many turn atheists and not god fearing
    Many give up religion altogether
Given the cultural mix we live in here
No prejudice is able to last forever

The world has adopted our folded handed “namaste”
That has long defined who we are as people
Our festivals are celebrated across the globe now
We are no longer considered weak and feeble

There is more to the customs I follow
Of my country than is visible on the outside
We are so much more than a bunch of snake charmers
We uphold our culture with great pomp, show and pride

    Hearts like wildflowers

To live or to survive, which is better?

In the middle of the feral forest and wilderness
Growing even under the shade of tall trees
Standing erect in the roaring rains
Never bowing in the beguiling breeze

Rooted deep in the terrestrial terrain
Unwilling to be pushed arbitrarily away
Bearing the brunt of the scorching heat
Unbending in negligent nights and dull days

Unbridled even when burnt to ashy cinders
    Finding sustained sustenance around
    Bearing a patiently prickly exterior
Reaching far till one is abundantly abound

May you posses a gorse like tenacious tenacity
May nothing conquer you and overpower
May you risk yourself while seditiously surviving
With a heart like the wonderful wildflowers

Arriving on the shores of New Zealand in early 1800s, Gorse - a member of the pea family , bearing a prickly exterior with bright yellow flowers, surviving the hot and humid summers and harsh winters, was originally brought to the country with the objective of acting like a wind breaking hedge while beautifying the landscape. Not only did Gorse inhabit all it was grown on, it spread like wildfire and refused to die even when burnt. It made life very difficult for the New Zealanders as it would take root whenever it was placed and seeds would burst when burnt and scatter and replant themselves. The thorns on the flowering plant made it impossible to act as feed for the cattle and other farm animals. Today Gorse occupies huge areas all along the coastline and in other spaces , silently but firmly rebuffing any attempts to be displaced. The government is still trying to work out a way of ridding themselves of the tenacious wild shrub that simply refuses to quit surviving.

    Cooking

In an attempt to kill time
I decided to learn how to cook
From new recipes I found on the internet
And traditional ones from a cookbook

I began small and without experimentation
With simple things like a cup of tea
And graduated to the usage of spices
That initially looked like Greek to me

With time came the confidence to be
More daring and much more experimental
I developed a flair for dramatic presentations
Only for my waistline it proved detrimental

Rice and veggies, meat and fish
Continually became putty in my hands
From being a complete dud in the kitchen
    I became a raging firebrand

Friends would send me the catch of the day
    And game they’d freshly caught
Gradually I lost the taste for food not made by me
Which from the market had been bought

With a fondness for international cuisine
I learnt how to make lasagnas, donuts and cakes
I learnt how to sift, sauté and fry
    Baste, grill, barbecue and bake

Now friends and family wait to be invited home
To be fed homemade scrumptious meals
Who would’ve thought cooking would become my forte
Rather than on home deliveries sorting out good deals

The thunder brings hope, joy and life
Ending the gnawing from the burning heat
Torrent rain floods the earth and sky

    Miraquill

A hidden gem among so many pebbles
A haven, a great source of joy
For writers, poets of all kinds and
Those who the written word employ

In writing tales both small and grand —
A place where they can just be themselves
Writing stories of happiness and sorrow
Of lands of fantasy, of pixies and elves

A supportive environment that helps one flourish
And find one’s own individual voice
A place where like minded people can
    Communicate without the needless noise

A word becomes a thought, that thought an idea
And that idea a full fledged poem here
It is comforting to know that someone somewhere
Is reading you from afar but is still near

A space filled with wonderful people who
Support you in the good times and in pain
A home for everyone who wants to simply
Express themselves without expectations or gains

It is tough for aspiring writers to put things into the void
While some write to vent and think
What better is it than to write to Miraquill
And turn thoughts into drops of ink

Thank you for being there for each one of us
At times for being the only one providing a stage
A spotlight, an identity and the courage to
Rise above the discouragement, unhappiness and rage

Sometimes when we were lost in you we found
The strength to write and to carry on
Thank you for being a shroud of comfort
For listening when everyone else was long gone

    Happy Birthday Miraquill

    Meeting

I am a nervous wreck to say the least
Now that the day to meet you has come along
I’ve tried while failing miserably to quieten
My racing thoughts by singing a song

Three months of having known you could’ve
Never prepared me for what has to come
This clandestine meeting is simply waiting
For me to become unmade and undone

Moist palms and rapid breaths while feeling
The sweat drip down my back like tears
I realise I am dealing with an anxiety attack
Giving way to all my fears

Much to my horror all I can think of is nothing
I’m as blank and white as a sheet
Little did I know I would turn into a bundle
Of desperation just when we were about to meet

With shallow breaths that refuse to deepen
And ease the illness I feel inside
My mind wants me to pick up the pace
And find a comfortable place to hide

I’m usually mentally strong and composed
Calm and patient most of the time
With you I feel I’m waiting for you to
Give me of approval a positive sign

Your comforting voice and compassionate manner
Do nothing for my racing heart at all
I feel weird and spaced out ,
Dizzy as though I may at any time fall

As you sit beside me and start talking
Take my hands into your warm palms
My pounding heart finally slows down
I’m left with no anxiety laden qualms

I’m able to focus finally on what you’re saying
You’re saying you wish we’d met sooner
    I shyly smile I for I know now I needn’t worry
Anymore about ever being a loner

    My heart

    Blemished from bruises
    Maimed and scarred
    Irrevocably injured lies
    My barely mended heart
    Deliberately neglected and
    Kept impossibly marred
    A garden that produces
    Only wild grass and flowers
    Feral seeds find sustenance and
    Grow to become staunch guards
    Covering every squalid inch
Of the dense forest like yard
The flowers that flourish are a ruse
To fill the gaps between pointed shards
Of a never again to be whole
    Mangled and mutilated heart

    Blue

I come riding on a high tide
To kiss the white sandy beach
Foamy, frothy billowing in the wind
I roll away slowly out of reach
    Jewel toned and freshly salty
Every drop of me is wet as the rain
Sea shells, fish, crabs and turtles
Life teems in my every grain.
Blue my heart, blue my soul
Blue the depth of my salty waters
Blue the sails of the boats that float
Undulating till the wind turns them into tatters
I tip toe in the daytime and make my way
Gently to the grainy sandy beach
With the moon I ride hard and roar
In the quiet of the night hear me screech
Carefully I plan my every ride
Sometimes I’m low , sometimes high
Crashing down to melt into the soft sand
My waves slowly turn into the tide
The heart of me stores schools and shoals
All manner of fish and creatures of the deep
Coral and seaweed bloom and multiply
Rocks of all kinds cover my floors in heaps
Drop by drop I am the ocean vast
In the sea shells hear me climb and vane
I am in the calm waters of the deep in the sun
And in the high tides over the night I reign

    Cage

Today I’ve finally found freedom from you
From the cage you built around me
For years I’ve struggled to be let go of
To be irrevocably forever set free

You had managed to convince me that
I no longer had the need to independently fly
That my life was nothing if not around you
That I should let life slowly pass me by

Now that I’m free from the chains
That had previously bound me to you
I know this was clearly a long time coming
It’s been a while since the last time I flew

Yet I think a part of me will always remain
Within those beautiful, gilded golden bars
Just like the ground remains wet
For a while after a heavy set of showers

Just like the scent of roses linger in a room
Long after they’ve been taken away from there
A slice of my spirit will always remain
In that cage for a lifetime ensnared

Something broke inside of me while I was trapped
And a section separated from my soul
I no longer was connected to my passions
I dreaded life and was scared manifold

An essence of me will always remain
Intertwined like a creeper to that cage
When you leave a space you’d once occupied
You leave behind so much more than you can gauge

A fragment has split from the inner depths of me
Never again to be fully whole
For a shattered a piece of glass becomes shards
A splinter, a torn section of a scroll

Just like that tear can never be mended again
    Without leaving a permanent scar
Independence can only free me that much
And flying can only really take me that far

    Shibui

I watch you lustily drape yourself along
    The cobbled pathways
In the dense forests I hear you pitter patter
And see you reflect the sun’s rays

As Komorebi shines in my heart
It is my furusato - this village alongside
The wabi-sabi of its austere and simple living
Makes me want to in its refuge forever hide

I come to lay the dyed fabrics of what will become
Kimonos and obis along your wet trail
Each one has their own oubaitori in essence
A beauty that has strength and is not frail

As the golden light filters through the bamboo
And the sukura that stand by you
I watch the flowers swirling in your waters
Watch the peach and plum covered in dew

The earthen pots I use to pour jasmine tea
Remind me of your gurgles as you trip and fall
The shibui of their delicate kintsugi forms are a
Lesson of reverence for all things great and small

You never stop flowing , however languidly
In you I see a feral and singular force rise
Smooth and fluid you are much like life
You slowly turn into a forceful tide

Ichi-go-ichi-e I’ve learnt from you over time
To stall and admire life once in a while
Setsunai from my heartbreaks I hope to forget
And learn to truly, inwardly smile

    Japanese words used:

    Komorebi (koh-mo-reh-bee)
    - the Japanese expression for the sunlight as it filters through the trees

    Furusato (foo-roo-sah-toh)
    - another word for one’s hometown, but it’s not simply about the place where you’re from but the place your heart longs for.

    Wabi-Sabi (WAH-bi SAH-bi)
    - the Japanese concept of beauty lies in appreciating the imperfections found in nature as all things of the natural world are impermanent and thus beautiful.

    Oubaitori (oh-buy-toe-ree)
    - people shouldn’t live their lives comparing themselves to others, but instead value their own unique traits.

    Sakura (sa-ku-rah)
    - cherry trees

    Shibui (shih’BOO-ee)
    - a term used to describe objects that are attractive in their austerity and restraint.

    Kintsugi (kin-tsu-gi)
    - is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

    Ichi-Go-Ichi-E (ih-chee-GO ih-chee-AY)
    - today is used as a reminder to slow down and savor each moment, because every encounter in life occurs only once.

    Setsunai (seh’tsoo-NA-ee)
    - A subtle emotion of bittersweet and seemingly endless pain, setsunai requires a sensitive nature to feel and is often associated with heartache and disappointment.

The Renaissance Man - Leonardo da Vinci

    “Just like disuse rusts iron
    Stagnant water loses purity
Weather in the cold becomes frozen,
Inaction results in the loss of the mind’s vitality”

In these words of Leonardo da Vinci
Is the secret to the whole renaissance movement
“For anything less would be considered a sin”
Unless there was a want for constant improvement

Born to a notary and a peasant woman
Leo interned as a young man in sculpture and art
His mind however was inquisitive about the interrelation
Between science and the manner of his craft

Credited as a painter, sculptor, engineer and inventor
He wore several hats with great flair
To him art could inspire science and vice versa
So studying both seemed naturally fair

When not absorbed in making artwork
He indulged in closely observing the the world
From flying birds to the workings of the human body
In his eyes it all cleverly unfurled

He created the first parachute and flying machine
The first machine gun, helicopter and diving suit
He was the inventor of the first self propelled cart
Created the first robot, modern city and armoured tank to boot

Residing in the true sense like a renaissance man
He lived in the pursuit of knowledge and invention
His keen brain was too advanced for his time
“The Mona Lisa” came to be his greatest creation

Although his ideas went unnoticed for hundreds of years
“The Last Supper” brought him notoriety
    Technology would have progressed rapidly
Had his ideas been converted into reality

His curiosity knew no bounds and made him
One of the greatest minds time has ever known
His radical ideas and thoughts paved the way
For the seeds of new creations in future to be sown

Changing the way we looked at the world
    One invention at a time
We would be wise to learn from his dictum
That inventions happen when science and art combine

    Fairytale

Like a decade old forgotten book kept on a dusty shelf
Covered in cobwebs and filled with pixies and elves
Our story was like a fairy tale gone wrong
Like the splintered notes of a broken song
Sometimes I think I still keep pressing on the old gashes
Lest I forget the pain that was caused by lacerations and scratches
There is a saccharine ache in reminiscing times gone by
In never letting the wet trail stop, letting the tears dry
In those fading memories are the bitter sweet moments of the past
Of a love that didn’t stand the test of time and last
In the memoirs of that old book on the dusty shelf
Is a recollection of my youthful, happier self
You, my dwindling memory like the dissipating sunlight
Have been kept captive all these years, held onto tight
Out of fear that if I were to lose you from my story somehow
I wouldn’t know how to fill the void now
The hurt you inflicted added colour to my grey life in a way
The cruel words slicing through my soul everyday
The constant jabbing and poking brought me to a point in time
Where I could almost predict the onslaught through the signs
And yet I stuck around for years on end
Since I refused to break, so instead I bent
Nevertheless I keep you trapped in that warped book
Refusing to forget all that away from me you took
Tucked away comfortably the past lives in the pages
Is the story of a love gone wry that’ll live on for ages

    Audience

To all my ill wishers and haters,

    For your discouragement and meanness
I’d like to thank each one of you
For encapsulating me in a bubble of doubt
So I was unable to comprehend which voice was true

For poking fun and jibing at me I’m grateful
For saying it was never the right time
Neither had I any talent of any sort for
All I could do was make words rhyme

    I would’ve never touched a pen like I hadn’t
In the whole decade I spent listening to you
You’d become the ringing voice in my head
A privilege I’d given to very few

They say time is a great healer and one should
Trust it to make to take the stinging pain away
Your demoralisation and dejection gave me
    Impetus, strength and conviction everyday

I am who I am because you were you
The path to wisdom to me you’ve shown
Your oppression caused me to discover
A courage inside that I’d never known

You are the audience I want today
To be able to read what I write and create
It has been so much fun finding my voice
And rising above your pettiness and hate

    With my best wishes
    Pallavi

    Masked

We are the dusty book I haven’t
Picked up to read in a long time
The shelf is covered with cobwebs
The pages are old and layered with grime
There is a story hidden in those pages
That was once filled with joy
That tale is now old and tired
Weighed down by remorse in the ploy
Haunted by ghosts of the past I’ve lived
Weary of the shame and mortification
Tried very hard to be better and not bitter
Kept my head high through the humiliation
A decade filled with contrition and sorrow
Forced the book to forever remain shut
Life seemed to have come to a standstill
Going round in circles in the same rut
There is a story hidden in that book
    One I’ve chosen to forget
The generous covering of dust helps in masking
The unfortunate truth laced with a veil of regret
