Masnavi (or Mathnawi): Poetic Forms

Mathnawi or Masnavi is normally poetry written in rhyming couplets. It is believed it emerged from an Iranian form around the 4th – 10th century, and the name is Persian and is not Arabic as some claim. The subject is usually heroic, romantic, or religious. Some Persian Mathnawi are especially significant in Sufism, Rumi’s Mathnawi-i-Ma’nawi is an outstanding example.

Here are the guidelines:

Couplet (or two-line) form...

...but with the qualifier that each "line" is actually a "half-line" and that they rhyme horizontally

Most Persian Mathnawi are normally eleven (11) syllables, occasionally ten (10). There is no limit to the number of couplets. It has a rhyme scheme is aa/bb/cc/dd and so on

Chant Royal: Poetic Forms

The chant royal is a 60 liner that uses rhymes and refrains. So yes, for those wondering, the chant royal is a French form that's been around at least since the 14th century.

Here are the guidelines:

Five 11-line stanzas followed by a five-line envoy

The 11-line stanzas have this rhyme scheme: ababccddedE

The envoy has this rhyme scheme: ddedE

The final line of every stanza is a refrain

Lines can be any consistent (for the poem) length, but it's most common if they're eight or 10 syllables

Since this form asks you to rotate the same five rhymes across 60 lines, pick rhymes you can maintain throughout. The "d" rhyme, in particular, is used 18 times in the poem!

Trijan Refrain

The Trijan Refrain, created by Jan Turner, consists of three 9-line stanzas, for a total of 27 lines. Line 1 is the same in all three stanzas, although a variation of the form is not to repeat the same line at the beginning of each stanza. In other words, the beginning line of each stanza can be different. The first four syllables of line 5 in each stanza are repeated as the double-refrain for lines 7 and 8. The Trijan Refrain is a rhyming poem with a set meter and rhyme scheme as follows:

Glose or Glosa: Poetic Forms

The glose or glosa is an interesting Spanish form that reminds me a bit of the golden shovel or cento. The basic premise is that you quote four lines of poetry as an epigraph from another poem or poet. These four lines act as a refrain in the final line of the four stanzas written by the poet. So the first line of the epigraph would be the final line of the first stanza, the second line ends the second stanza, etc.

The most common convention is for each of these stanzas to be ten lines in length. There are no other hard and fast rules for rhymes or syllables, though line length is usually consistent within the poem (so the epigraph kind of sets the line length).

Rinnard: Poetic Forms

The rinnard is an Irish poetic form. It has the following guidelines:

Quatrain (or four-line) poem (or stanzas).

Six-syllable lines.

Two-syllable rhymes at the end of each line.

Rhyme scheme for each quatrain: abcb.

The "a" and "c" words consonate with the "b" words.

Usually an aicill rhyme between lines three and four.

Note on aicill rhyme: An aicill rhyme in this poem means that the final syllable of line three rhymes somewhere in line four (usually the middle). While I tried in my example below, I came up just a tad short--unless we want to really slant the rhyme of "fever/heated" in the first stanza.

Nashers: Poetic Forms

A light verse form invented by Ogden Nash. Nashers, named after Ogden Nash, are couplets (of any length) that feature comical rhymes, including wrenched rhymes. The popular wrenched rhyme example (also mentioned in Edward Hirsch's A Poet's Glossary) is from Nash's poem "Kindly Unhitch That Star, Buddy," in which he rhymes "rhinestones" with "ghrinestones."

Wrenched Rhyme

Light rhyme designates a weakened, or unaccented, rhyme that pairs a stressed final syllable with an unstressed one.[1][2] A rhyme of this kind is also referred to as a wrenched rhyme since the pronunciation of the unstressed syllable is forced into conformity with the stressed syllable of its rhyme mate (eternity/free).[3] Light rhymes are commonly found in music where words are sung with an unnatural emphasis on the final syllable.[2]

Flamenca poem form

Flamenca, also known as the seguidilla gitana or Gypsy seguidilla, a Spanish quintain form.

The flamenca is a Spanish quintain (or 5-line stanza) form with a staccato rhythm meant to replicate the click of heels by flamenco dancers. The flamenca goes by a few other names, including seguidilla gitana (or Gypsy seguidilla), playera, and/or sequiriya.

Here are basic guidelines of the flamenca:

5 lines

lines 1, 2, 4, and 5 have 6 syllables

line 3 has 5 syllables

lines 2 and 5 assonate

Variation: Lines 3 and 4 may be combined to make an 11-syllable line and quatrain (or 4-line) stanza.

Here are the rules of tricubes:

Each line contains three syllables.

Each stanza contains three lines.

Each poem contains three stanzas.

So we're talking cubes in mathematical terms (to the third power). No rules for rhymes, meter, etc. Just three, three, and three.

Terza Rima Sonnet Poetry Form

Dating to the thirteenth century, the terza rima (Italian for “third rhyme”) is a classic form of writing poetry in three-line stanzas called tercets, which are interlinked by their rhyming pattern. They use the ending sound from each tercet’s middle line, as the first and third of the next, creating the pattern (aba, bcb, cdc, ded, and so on). There is no limit to the number of tercet stanzas that can be used.

The terza rima is often credited to the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). He was the first to use the form to create a popular recorded epic, The Divine Comedy, but it was probably based on tercet poems and songs performed by the Provencal troubadours of his day.

Geoffrey Chaucer introduced the terza rima to England with his poem “Complaints to his Lady,” but it was truly popularized by Thomas Wyatt through both translations and original works. It became a favorite style for many of the English romantic poets of the 19th century.

Meter

Originally, terza rimas were written in eleven syllable lines (hendecasyllable), however any meter can be used as long as it is consistent throughout. Most written in English, are done using iambic lines, with either pentameter or tetrameter being the most common.
