पहली मुलाकात
बे क़रार था दिल ये मेरा पहली मुलाक़ात के रोज़,
अंदाज़ा ना था मुझको, कि इश्क़ का होगा ऐसा सोज़
मुलाक़ात हुई, बात हुई, एक शाम हसीं बीत गई ऐसे,
वो मिली मुझसे इस क़दर, दिए से मिली हो रोशनी जैसे,
एक अजब सी कशिश थी, उसकी गहरी निग़ाहों में,
जैसे राज़ खोल रही हो बिन बताए, आंखों ही आंखों में,
जाते देख उसे दिल पर मेरे कोई उदासी नहीं छाई,
बस ख़ुद के भीतर ही कहीं एक खलिश सी मैंने पाई....||

There is a city
A Tower of Light
More Ancient than time itself
The City bursts with life.
The City is a phenomenon
A Organism that is alive
With breathtaking ghats,
In the lap of Mother Ganges
Kashi is paradise.
For,Kashi,no one is a stranger
An Enemy, a foe or a friend,
For Kashi, is all inclusive
For, Kashi is the Eternal
She has no beginning no end.
Kashi, is older than history
Newer than tomorrow yet to come
Kashi, is the only city in the cosmos,
Where the Moon meets the Sun.
Kashi, dances wild
Kashi, meditates still
Kashi, embodies the possibility
To go beyond the realm of senses
To be the master of your own will.

Kashi
काशी के घाटों पर हमने अजब नजर देखा,
जिंदगी में पहली बार किसी एक नवयुगल को पहली बार मिलते देखा
और जब नज़र घुमाया तो वही उसी घाट पर एक मुर्दे को जलते देखा।
जिंदगी में मैं भौतिकता और अधिकमितका का मिलन यही देखा,
जीवन में उमंग और उल्लास के साथ जीवन की नश्वरता को याही देखा;
और इसिलिए हम कहते हैं
दुनिया में बहुत कुछ देखा लेकिन
काशी जैसा शहर अन्य पर और कहीं नहीं देखा।।

The city of Gods
Where the dead cannot smell like death,
Where the place is made of divine math,
Where the water is sacred symbol of divine,
Where the ground vibrates in the god's mind,
Where the fire is doorway beyond the existence of time,
Where the gods want to live and embrace their sacred line,
Where the life is lived like it should be everyday,
Where the eternal lovers are spiritual in every way,
Where there is beauty even in the burning of karma,
Where there is fear when someone takes the path of adharma,
Where the place is as old as sacred spell of om,
Where the sound is as enthralling as a child's dream in a womb,
This is kashi, my kashi, our kashi of Mother Earth,
The death meets here with grace if not the birth,
I have nothing left but her longing lies within me,
Just to be in her lap again just yet to be!

तेरी मोतियों सी आंसू बनेगी गंगा,
हमारे पुराने शिकवे उनमें बह जाएंगे,

Banaras is like that one beloved with whom you never want to break up but you go far far away from her that is not because you don't love her anymore but because you don't want her to be blamed for tells of your struggle with life but once you win you give all credit to that beloved.

हुए उसके संग बड़े हो खेल-पढ़ कर तुम...
क्यों दुखी हो तुम, जो साथी क़ामयाब है!

वो लड़की जिसके साथ, कल हो गई बदसलूकी,
सब से कहा तुमने, "उसे न हिस थी आबरू की...
बद्चलन है हर वो औरत, जो बेनक़ाब है!"

कह "हरिजन" चल दिये थे, जिसकी तुम चौखट से,
वो दिलाता मुक्ति सब को, काशी के पनघट पे...
जाति, रंग, धर्मों का तुमने, अच्छा किया हिसाब है!
और तुम कहा करते हो, कि ज़माना ख़राब है!

घर जला कर आये हो, तुम जिस मुहाजिर का...
रब तुम्हारा भी वही है, जो था काफ़िर का!
माथे पर, न इक शिकन, न नयन में आब है!

क्या कहोगे चित्रगुप्त से, न रहोगे जब?
हैं फ़रिश्तों के ज़हन, करतब तुम्हारे सब...
तुम को पर मालूम बेशक़, यह भी जवाब है!

तुम भी बनारस सी बस एक दिन ही हो पाते हो।
देव दीपावली के दिन तुम और बनारस दुल्हन से हो जाते हो।

दोनों एक साथ तो बस इसी शहर से हो सकता है।

बनारस की एक शाम मैं कुछ खत तुम्हारे नाम एक घाट पर छोड़ आया था।
आज भी वो खत मेरा पीछा नहीं छोड़ते हैं।
जब भी कलम उठाता हूँ वजह पुछते हैं बेरुखी का।
ख़तों का यहीं दोष है आपसे अनेकों सवाल पूछते हैं।
जवाब दो फिर भी एक खत लिखो।
जवाब न दो फिर भी एक खत लिखो।
और इन सब के क्रम में उलहना देती रहती है स्याही।
यही हश्र होता है जब भी आप कुछ छोड़ आते हैं।
चाहे सजीव या निर्जीव।
