This Much I Do Know
I came to visit you today.
The snow has melted from the blades
Of grass that covers where you lay.
I should be sad, but not today.
When I was young and not so big,
We used to travel in your rig
To buy alfalfa and bale hay,
Just you and me, I miss those days.
You worried for me near the end,
But please don't worry, my heart will mend.
I couldn't be the man you dreamed.
I hope you saw the good in me.
I chose my path not out of spite.
I didn't mean to cause a fight.
I only hope you understood,
I did the very best I could.
My regrets are mounting with each day.
Sometimes I wonder what you'd say.
If only you could see me now.
I'd like to think that you'd be proud.
There is so much we didn't do.
I wanted to succeed for you.
To see pride twinkle in your eyes
As you watched me on the rise.
I cannot see you in the mirror.
I possess a fraction of your character.
But sure as spring now brings the Sun,
Please know I'll always be your son.
