I feared if I would ever be able to come out of those cursed circumstances. A beautiful day had almost turned into a disaster just when she came for help. It was the last day of Durga Puja. I had a wonderful day at work. I was applauded for an assignment that I submitted before time. But the moment you step out into Kolkata streets during Durga Puja all happiness subsides. Its a happy feeling anyway, to see all the women dressed in red, recreating and shouting, following Maa. I was on my way back home, but in order to avoid the rush I took some route other than usual. After driving to some distance I realized that I had committed a huge mistake. The Durga Puja-Muharram tensions were on. I could see burning vehicles and people still not satisfied with the devastation. I put the car in reverse gear but it was too late. I parked it under a tree slowly, waiting for things to normalize but I knew it won't happen soon. A group of people started towards my car howling. I pretended to have fainted. They dragged me out, threw me on the road, and burnt down my car! I was helpless. So, I kept pretending. A little later they left. I stood up and cried. I bought it after saving for 7 years and now it was nothing but ashes. I was hurt. Just then she came for help. I couldn't have asked for a better Vijayadashmi gift. She asked me to hop in her car. She took me to the nearest hospital where I received first aid. I did not get a chance to thank her until she offered me for a ride back home since all my belongings along with my hand set had burnt with the car. She was a beautiful young woman. With a great amount of dignity and pride in her eyes, she looked extremely different from any other female on this earth. I thanked her more than a dozen times for saving my life and she was embarrassed each time. She took the route in which the Procession was going on. I wanted to prompt her but all the other streets now felt really unsafe. I asked for her name but she kept on driving. I asked again, hesitant this time, and she answered, "I've a lot of names but you can call me... " she was hushed by a person who said that either we should take some other route or wait until morning if we want to get home. I thought she would continue saying what she was but she stepped down and told me that she's going to check on the traffic. After she was a little away, another person from behind came and asked to reverse the car. I was in no condition to handle the steering wheel since I got my wrist broken, so, I stepped out to call the woman. I could see her vanishing in the crowd. I tried pacing up but she kept on walking, without looking back. It was difficult for me to cut through the crowd with a broken wrist but I had to get home. She reached the idol and kept staring at it. She might have been dumbfounded by seeing Maa's humongous and prettiest statue like every other human being. She walked to the back side of the idol, maybe remembering that she had to check the traffic, and I finally made uptill there. But, to my surprise, when I reached there, there was no one! I looked around but she was nowhere! She went behind the idol and vanished! The women were performing 'Sindur Khela' when one of them painted my face red and asked me to join my hands before Maa. I folded my hands to her and saw a pair of eyes filled with unearthly dignity and pride.
To all the women out there, everyone, who are struggling their way out and are trying their best to make a mark in this society. Hats off to you guys. You are the strongest, you are the bravest, you guys are the best. Maa Durga lives in each one of you.
P.S- the bengali verse inside the quotation roughly translates into "Maa Durga is starting her journey back to her paternal home tomorrow, isn't it mom? “
