FALLING
Who was it that said
That you must always fall ��������
Down.
��������?
Why not up?
Or for that matter, Sideways?
When did your mind
Become a slave to gravity?
Were you so pleased with the experience
Of your body being in its thrall
That you needed to have it extended
To your brain, as well?
Why shackle yourself
To the crumbling ruins
Of a pebble in the sky
When there are a million stars
Whose light is yet to reach you?
Why are you content
With staring up at the sky
Till your neck muscles ache
And it's time to cook dinner?
The same dinner you've cooked
For all these nights
So that you can fall in to bed
And dream and dream
Bright technicolour visions
Only to wake up
To the dull shades of grey
And puddles of rain on the pavement
Why not climb to the cliff edge
That you visited just yesterday
And the day before
And the day before that too
Why not fall ����?
Or for that matter, ����������������?
And see the difference.

By "Pebble in the sky", I refer to the earth itself, lost in a wide universe.
The phrase is actually the title of a book by Isaac Asimov, one of my favourite Science fiction writers.

Each day I climb new mountains
in the struggle for life.
Sometimes my limbs get weary
and I want to give, but I have to go on.
Giving up would mean losing
everything my life was meant for.
Therefore, I must struggle
never giving my body a rest.
I must climb these new mountains
or I am doomed forever more.
There is no turning back once started,
as it doesn’t work that way.
Each day there is a new mountains
that gets bigger with each day
and we must reach the summit by nightfall
or get stuck on the mountain going nowhere.
The harder we climb,
the higher we get
until we reach
the apex of our dreams.
