A Spenserian Sonnet inspired by @a_gentilischi 's recent post, based on the following conversation between Sheldon and Penny from The Big Bang Theory:
"Penny: So, I guess the only thing that actually stays the same is that things are always changing. Sheldon: Interesting. So you're saying the inevitability of change might be a universal constant." __________________________________________________ CHANGE
Our world isn't always the same, But continually subject to change, It is the essence of life's game, Derailing some plans I arrange.
Perpetual transitions, I find strange, I fill with agony and fear, With constancy I wish to exchange, Change happening year after year.
Then, in the sky, I see the moon appear, Differing in shape, with each passing day, Embracing all it's phases with cheer, Hopeful of its life being gleeful and gay.
Change is imminent, it's a universal constant, Change enables mankind to become persistent.
Long ago, deep inside, A tiny spark ignited, Bickering and flickering. Fueled by passion, Driven by ambition, The spark metamorphosed, And a blazing fire roared.
Meanwhile, in a distant land, Mighty forces amassed, Coalescing into a rigid mass, The cold ice they formed. The fire growing fierce, The ice though, no less, The fire far and oblivious of, The winter that was coming.
The time had come, Fire and ice encountered, Each trying to devour the other. The fire burned bright, Seeking to weaken the ice, But it only grew stronger, Subduing the fire's tough fight.
The ice, no more rigid, Doused the flaming fire, Flowing over its wreckage, Washing away the dead fire.
Good bye to the past, We said in the year last, Eager to do wonders, We were firm and steadfast. An invisible being was born, It started to multiply and warn, Harbinger of a global pandemic, Leaving the world to mourn.
The virtual became real, Safety and precaution the deal, We adorned face masks and shields, And sanitized from head to heal. Confined to our home, Nowhere could we roam, Family and friends adding colours, To life that seemed monochrome.
My bunch of friends, the best, To have them I feel blessed, Sharing memes, reliving memories, Together acing every test. Keeping close though far, Discussing stories there are, From lands of Mirzapur and Westeros, To Harry Potter's forehead scar.
The year's reached the finish mark, With moments of both dullness and spark, Time again to say good bye to the past, But only to the gloomy and dark. In the new year this weekend, Abundant hope and joy I send, Cheers to new beginnings, As it is never the end. _______________________________________________ 2020 was indeed a roller coaster ride with so much happening in all our lives! Wise and insightful, Compassionate and kind, She was our Minerva, Enlightening all our lives. A brilliant creator, She was gifted with a quill, Letters inked sparkling, Giving wings to her ardour. Her voice, her strength, Feeble minds couldn't withstand, Violent hurricanes of patriarchy, Ruining her zealous castle of sand.
//Heap of talent, Kindled with passion, Why then were her dreams crippled?//
Thank you so much @writersnetwork for the incredibly thoughtful repost. You are love ________________________________________________
CRAVING THE VOID
. Sound of simple monotony is ever so loud
As it croons in my ear to join the crowd
Approaching me like a great storm cloud
WHEN ALL I WANT IS STILLNESS
Your routines, routes, they wear me out
You only know how to haggle and shout
To flock and frolic, to login, but not logout
WHEN ALL I WANT IS SILENCE
These expectations are endless smoky seas
Constricting caricatures, blurred boundaries
Upon it I sail, with my soul's unheard pleas
WHEN ALL I WANT IS ABANDONMENT
Even the words I write cause too much pain
Birthed through paroxysms of a mind insane
They come and come to bind me with chain
WHEN ALL I WANT IS FREEDOM
Then there are 'emotions' and 'good' and 'bad'
The preachers and sermons drive me mad
Don't act like you care if I'm 'happy' or 'sad'
WHEN ALL I CRAVE IS THE VOID
Oh my goodness, a POD? It was the last thing I expected today ❤️❤️ Thank you so much @mirakee@writersnetwork And huge thanks and love out to all the amazing friends I've met here ________________________________________________
Where do all the unsent messages go
When they are stranded on the shores
Of 'drafts' and 'scheduled', awaiting in dread
For the inevitable journey to the lonesome 'bin'
Where do all the regretfully erased words go
Maimed and disfigured Times New Roman
Fading in the silent void of utter obscurity
As the well worn backspace button strikes
Where do all those hopeless love letters go
When their recipients are ravaged, rotting corpses
On a dark battlefield, continents and seas away So that the stamped dusty envelopes are useless
Where do my own pen's pathetic poems go
The ones that I write at midnight in tears
That I crumple, then thoughtlessly sentence
To confines of the unemptied waste paper bucket
Where do the faded, decade old diaries go
When their beloved authors are no more
And there's no one left that cares enough
To tend to those flickering memories
Maybe, just maybe there's a special place
A hallowed heaven for the lost, a warm abode
The sanctuary the words desired and were promised
But which they never tasted, in real life
Or maybe it's much simpler and crueler
Maybe they're at a much closer place
Deprived of rest, peace and eternal grace
Maybe they're still bleeding ink and pain
Maybe they're still lodged, deep inside
The cracks of the shattered beating hearts
Is that why it hurts so much
Here I've tried out the Spenserian Sonnet, which has a rhyme scheme of ABAB BCBC CDCD EE. This is my first time trying out a sonnet of any form, so if you notice mistakes or have suggestions, they're most welcome.
This is my submission for the "Call of the Wild" challenge which is now closed, but stay tuned to @_luvnotz_outpost for more challenge opportunities in a few days. And thank you for your wonderful support!
CALL OF THE WILD by Carolyn Glackin In tribal beats of native drum A primal force begins to hum 'Round bonfire's flame, a voice doth rise With fury born of land and skies Comprised of elements of Earth Alive in all from time of birth In every woman, man, and child An ancient call, the call of the wild It's a trinity, it's a holy nexus Residing in our solar plexus It's the sound of rain On the jungle's floor It's the might and main of a lion's roar It's the crackle of lightning And the rumble of thunder That leaves us filled With awestruck wonder It's the deep unending wail of pain Mums let out when a child is slain It's the echo of mountains in the mist And the crashing of waves On shores, sunkissed It's the tradewinds blowin' 'Cross the sand It's our ancestors voice, in every land It's a lone wolf howling 'neath the moon And the sun beating down In the month of June It's the stars that fall out From the skies And the flapping of wings As the eagle flies It's the battle cry in a warrior's heart It's the agony felt when lovers part It's a collective call to all mankind That comes to awaken And comes to remind A call that ignites the Divine within So each soul's work can then begin It's a sacred call, neither meek nor mild Evermore, may we heed it The call of the wild.
