Underneath your hard exterior
and beneath your guilt and shame,
looking through the windowpane,
I see you.
Underneath your steel façade
and beneath what may seem odd
to those who don’t know God.

Understand, the left can’t know
what the right will someday sow.
Let the former be your foe

If you’re conceived from a date
and branded a “mistake”,
who is responsible?
If you were unloved; rejected
and always neglected,
who is responsible?
If you were just a young girl
with no love in the world,
who is responsible?
If your youth was infused
with tear-soaked tissues,
who is responsible?
If you were torn down and scarred
for shining like a star,
who is responsible?
If your mother beat you down
when there was no one around,
who is responsible?
If you were sexually used
by a stepdad or two,
who is responsible?
If you were made to pay the price
for the look in your predator’s eyes,
who is responsible?
If you were told you’d be nothing
and your mom wasn’t bluffing,
who is responsible?
If you were raised to be bait
for a man’s sexy date,
who is responsible?
If your heart was left numb
and you fell in love young,

If you didn’t want sex

If you end up “with child”

If your fears have come true
and your mom lives in you,

If you can’t live your truth
due to trauma in youth,
who is responsible?
If relationships fail
before you’ve hoisted a sail,
who is responsible?
If you count it all joy
yet, the work you avoid,
who is responsible?
If you stay in deceit,
harboring pain and greed,
who is responsible?
If you’re playing pretend
and won’t make real amends,
who is responsible?
If you’ll reach for your back
and pull out your mother’s knife
instead of making space for it

tucking it to sleep

maybe YOU can be responsible?
